A used hearing aid on an online marketplace, priced at a third of the shop rate. For a family already stretched by a parent’s medical bills, it looks like a clever shortcut.
We understand why people consider it. But hearing aids aren’t like a second-hand phone, and this is one purchase where the cheap option often ends up costing more.

Is It Safe to Buy a Second-Hand Hearing Aid in India?
Usually not a good idea. A hearing aid is set up for one person’s hearing loss, ears and listening needs. When it moves to someone else, almost everything that made it work for the first owner works against the second.
It isn’t dangerous the way a faulty medicine can be. The more likely outcome is that you pay, wear it for a week, hear sounds that are too harsh or too faint, and quietly stop using it.
What Are the Main Risks of Buying a Used Hearing Aid?
| Programming | Set for the previous owner’s audiogram. Yours is different, so it may sound wrong or be uncomfortable. |
| Fit | Custom in-the-ear models are moulded to one person’s ear. They won’t fit yours properly. |
| Hygiene | Earwax, moisture and skin contact. Ears can get irritated or infected if the device isn’t properly cleaned. |
| Warranty and service | Usually none. Manufacturer warranty rarely transfers to a second owner. |
| Age and condition | You can’t easily tell how old it is, how it was used, or whether it’s been repaired. |
| Missing parts | Domes, wax guards, chargers and cases are often missing or worn. |
There’s also a cost people forget. A wrong setting doesn’t just waste money. If it’s uncomfortable, a parent may decide hearing aids don’t work and give up on them altogether.
Can Someone Else’s Hearing Aid Be Reprogrammed for Me?
Sometimes the device itself can be reprogrammed by an audiologist, if the model and software allow it. That doesn’t fix the other problems: fit, hygiene, age and missing warranty. Some older or locked models can’t be reprogrammed at all.
By the time you’ve paid for a hearing test, new tips or domes, a cleaning and a fitting session, the saving may be much smaller than the listing suggested.
When Might a Second-Hand Hearing Aid Make Sense?
Rarely, but there are cases. A receiver-in-canal model from a family member, with a recent audiogram, cleaned and checked by an audiologist, is less of a gamble than one from a stranger. Even then, get it looked at before you rely on it.
A used custom in-the-ear aid is the worst candidate, because it was moulded to someone else’s ear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to buy a second-hand hearing aid?
It’s not recommended. A used hearing aid is programmed for someone else’s hearing loss and may not fit, sound right or come with any warranty.
Can I use someone else’s hearing aid?
Not without an audiologist checking it. Even when it can be reprogrammed, fit, hygiene and condition remain concerns.
Can a used hearing aid be reprogrammed for a different person?
Sometimes, if the model and software allow it, but the cost of testing, cleaning and fitting can eat into the saving.
Do second-hand hearing aids come with a warranty?
Usually not. Manufacturer warranties generally don’t transfer to a second owner, so you’d carry any repair cost.
What’s a cheaper way to get a hearing aid in India?
Choose a technology level that matches your needs, use 0% EMI, and try the device for 3 days before committing. Central Government employees can also check CGHS reimbursement.
Can I get a hearing aid I bought elsewhere checked at Insono?
Yes. The audiologists can look at a device bought elsewhere, though warranty terms depend on where you bought it.
Is the hearing test free at Insono?
Yes. The initial test is free and carries no obligation to buy.
