Why Is My Hearing Aid Whistling? An Audiologist Explains
Is your hearing aid whistling or squealing? Audiologist Mr. Manoj Kumar explains hearing aid feedback, common causes, home checks and when to seek help.
A question I hear quite often is: "Doctor, my hearing aid keeps whistling. What should I do?"
When this happens repeatedly, some people become uncomfortable wearing their hearing aids, especially outside the home. That is exactly why I want to talk about it today.
A whistling, squealing or high-pitched sound from a hearing aid is commonly referred to as feedback. It happens when amplified sound escapes from the ear and is picked up again by the hearing aid's microphone, creating a feedback loop.
So, what causes hearing aid whistling?
In my experience, one of the most common reasons is a fit problem. If the hearing aid, earmould or dome is not sitting properly in the ear, amplified sound can escape and return to the microphone. Sometimes, simply taking the device out and reinserting it correctly can stop the whistling. If it keeps coming back, however, the fit should be checked.
Another possibility is that the dome or earmould is no longer providing an appropriate fit. A dome that is too small or an earmould that has become loose over time can allow sound to escape. This is one reason why the physical fit of a hearing aid should be reviewed when persistent feedback develops.
Can earwax cause whistling? Yes. Earwax or debris around the earpiece, receiver or wax guard can interfere with the way the device functions and may contribute to feedback. This is why regular cleaning is an important part of hearing aid care. If you suspect that you have excess earwax in your ear, do not try to remove it with cotton buds or sharp objects. Have it checked by a professional.
A worn or damaged component can also be responsible. A cracked tube, loose connection or worn dome may affect the way the hearing aid sits and functions. Volume is another factor. When amplification is set higher than necessary, feedback can occur more easily.
Sometimes, the issue may also be related to a change in hearing. If your hearing has changed since your last assessment, your hearing aid settings may need to be reviewed and adjusted.
There is one situation where a brief whistle can be completely normal. If you cup your hand over your ear, wear a hat, hug someone or hold a phone close to the hearing aid, sound can be reflected back towards the microphone and cause a short whistle. The concern is persistent or repeated feedback without an obvious trigger.
So, what can you check at home?
Start by taking the hearing aid out and reinserting it gently and correctly. Then wipe the earpiece with a clean, dry cloth and check the visible components and wax guard. You can also lower the volume slightly to see whether the sound changes, although this is only a quick check and not a long-term solution.
Pay attention to when the whistling happens. Is it present all the time? Does it occur only when you increase the volume? Does it happen when you touch the device, wear a cap or use your phone?
These details can be useful during a consultation. Knowing when the feedback occurs can help an audiologist identify whether the issue may be related to fit, positioning, components or settings.
When should you see an audiologist?
If the whistling continues after these basic checks, or if it is new, frequent or distracting, it is better not to ignore it. A hearing aid fitting is not only about programming the device according to a hearing test. Physical fit, comfort, feedback and your experience in everyday listening situations also matter.
A professional check may involve reviewing the fit, cleaning the device, replacing a worn component or adjusting the settings. I would always rather review a patient's hearing aid than have them reduce their wearing time because the device has become uncomfortable or distracting.
If your hearing aid has started whistling repeatedly, speak with your audiologist rather than simply tolerating it. You can visit your nearest Insono Hearing Solutions branch or contact us to book a hearing aid fitting check.
