Same Hearing Loss, Different Hearing Aid? Why Hearing Aid Selection Matters

Two people can have similar hearing loss but different hearing needs. Learn why hearing aid selection depends on lifestyle, communication and daily listening needs.

When two people have a similar hearing test result, it is easy to assume they should need the same hearing aid.

In my experience as an audiologist, that assumption can be misleading.

A hearing assessment tells us important information about a person's hearing ability, but it does not tell us everything about how that person uses their hearing throughout the day. Two patients with similar hearing loss can have very different communication needs, listening environments, lifestyles, and expectations.

That is one of the reasons hearing aid selection should never be based only on the degree of hearing loss.

Consider two patients with a broadly similar hearing profile.

The first person may spend most of the day at home, communicating mainly through one-to-one conversations and familiar surroundings. For this person, simplicity, comfort, ease of handling, and everyday usability may be particularly important when discussing options for choosing the right hearing aid.

The second person may work in meetings, regularly interact with several people, spend time in restaurants or other busy environments, and frequently move between different listening situations. Their hearing needs may be very different, even though their hearing test looks similar on paper.

This is where the role of an audiologist becomes important.

When I meet a patient, I do not look at the audiogram in isolation. I also want to understand where they need to hear, who they communicate with, and what situations are most important in their daily life.

I may ask questions such as:

Where do you find communication most difficult? Do you mainly communicate one-to-one or in groups? How often are you in noisy environments? Do you use the telephone frequently? What activities are important in your daily routine? How comfortable are you with handling and maintaining a hearing device?

These questions can change the direction of a hearing aid consultation.

A patient's hearing assessment remains an essential part of the process. But the assessment tells us about the hearing loss; the conversation helps us understand the person living with that hearing loss.

This is also why choosing a hearing aid should not become a simple comparison of features or prices. A device may have impressive technology, but the more important question is whether it suits the individual's hearing requirements, lifestyle, communication needs, and preferences.

A personalized hearing aid may be more appropriate for one person's daily routine, while another person with a similar level of hearing loss may benefit from a different solution. The goal is not simply to find a device for a particular degree of hearing loss, but to find an option that supports the person's different hearing needs.

The same principle applies to hearing aid fitting. Selecting a suitable device is only one part of hearing care. The device also needs to be fitted and adjusted according to the individual's hearing profile, with appropriate guidance on its use and care.

At Insono Hearing Solutions, our approach to hearing care begins with understanding the individual rather than treating every hearing loss in exactly the same way. A professional hearing assessment, detailed consultation, and personalized hearing aid selection can help make the process more relevant to each person's needs.

So, can two people with similar hearing loss need different hearing aids?

Absolutely.

Because hearing loss may be measured on a chart, but hearing needs are experienced in real life.
